With more than 180,000 people expected in Downtown Atlanta for New Year’s Eve festivities, the Atlanta Police Department brought out its Skywatch tower, equipped with IMLCORP’s SoundCommander SC1000LS system with four speakers mounted on the tower’s roof, to help maintain crowd control by blanketing the area with intelligible, clear voice.
The tower was erected at Peachtree and Wall streets. It put an officer with surveillance cameras and loudspeakers 30 feet above the crowd as part of a major effort by the APD to respond to violent incidents. While New Year’s Eve at the Peach Drop has been relatively safe, there was a stabbing incident last year.
Atlanta PD used a SoundCommander SC1000CP Command Pack portable lightweight tactical sound system during Occupy Atlanta and during a SWAT operation in November. The PD also used the SC1000CP for the Rolling Thunder traffic operation on highways in the city during the Thanksgiving weekend.
