We loaned a SoundCommander® SC1000 CP/EP to the Atlanta Police Department last week in case they needed some more powerful sound in dealing with Occupy Atlanta. The officer we gave it to noted that they had used a bullhorn earlier, and occupiers taunted them, saying they couldn’t hear instructions.
It wasn’t much different in Portland, OR when police used bullhorns while clearing occupiers there. Listening to a radio report, in which the reporter noted police had bullhorns, you had to listen very closely to hear police instructions over the crowd.
New York’s finest didn’t use the finest available sound equipment, either, in their eviction of occupiers in Zuccotti Park. A slideshow on the New York Times website showed a picture of police using a bullhorn and a picture of occupiers shouting in unison. I think I can guess who delivered the message with more sound volume.
The Times also reported protests may be switching to college campuses. Will campus safety and security personnel be better equipped to use verbal instructions to control crowds and protect lives?
It’s time to bury the bullhorns. It’s time to use SoundCommander® loudspeaker systems – easily deployed and designed for voice clarity – to take control of the situation. Otherwise, occupiers will occupy your presence and undermine your authority.
